Samantha Eimers went 6-for-8 with two home runs and five runs batted in on Thursday night, but it was not enough as Palm Beach Atlantic swept Mercyhurst 11-7 and 7-3 to conclude the spring trip to Florida for the Lakers. Mercyhurst finished the trip with a 3-5 record and currently have a 7-9 overall mark.
Eimers went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in game one, but the Sailfish held off a late Mercyhurst rally.
Palm Beach Atlantic scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Mercyhurst starter
Annie Truelove, who dropped to 2-3 on the season.
Mercyhurst would cut the lead to 6-2 after
Jen Bower hit a home run to leadoff the second inning and Eimers hit one to leadoff the third frame.
Eimers would draw the Lakers to within two runs with a single in the fourth inning that plated a pair of runs. But, the Sailfish would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to end any thoughts of a Mercyhurst comeback.
Eimers hit her second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the seventh inning, followed by a solo shot by
Emily Redig, but the Lakers could get no closer.
Truelove lasted just one-and-one-third innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs.
Megan Hopton pitched the final four-and-two-thirds and allowed five runs on eight hits.
Kristen Fyffe also had three hits in game one for the Lakers.
Eimers went 3-for-4 in the second game, but again early runs by Palm Beach Atlantic would cost the Lakers in the nightcap. The Sailfish scored three runs in each of the first and second innings, to take a 6-0 advantage.
Mercyhurst got a run back in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Fyffe and two more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Redig and an RBI groundout by Bower.
The Sailfish would tack on a run in the fifth inning to cap off the scoring.
Kristi Janoske started but lasted just one-and-two-thirds innings. She allowed five earned runs (six total) on eight hits.
Megan Smith gave up one run on two hits in the final four-and-a-third innings.
The Lakers will have some time off now before getting back into action on March 10 with a doubleheader at Shepherd University. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
