Mercyhurst Opens Season With Sweep of St. Andrews

Laurinburg, N.C. – The Mercyhurst University softball team swept both games of a doubleheader at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Thursday, Feb. 9. The Lakers downed the Knights, 10-3 and 9-0.

With the two wins, the Lakers start off their season 2-0, while the Knights fall to 2-4.

For the doubleheader, Samantha Eimers went 3-for-6 with a double and a home run. Freshman Shaina Bunker went 4-for-7 from the plate with a double and a home run. 

Mercyhurst scored three runs in the second inning and exploded in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Mercyhurst totaled 10 runs in the first game. The Lakers then went on to score two or more runs in four out of five innings in the second game, totaling nine runs in the win.

Kristi Janoske, Megan Hopton and Annie Truelove combined on the mound for the first win. Janoske allowed three runs on four hits and also tallied a strike out in four innings pitched.  Hopton didn't allow a run in two innings pitched, giving up only two hits while adding a strikeout.  Truelove, a freshman, didn't allow a run or hit in one inning pitched.

Megan Smith and Cherise Gunnell pitched the second game of the double header for the Lakers. Smith had two strikeouts and allowed just one hit in four innings pitched, while Gunnell pitched one inning not allowing a hit or run.

For the Knights, Mary Cross and Brittany Gunn each suffered a loss. Cross pitched six innings and surrendered seven hits and had only one strikeout in the first game. Gunn gave up 11 hits while pitching all five innings of the second game.

The Lakers had a total of 18 RBI on the day, with Eimers and Bunker leading the way with four apiece.  Freshman Lauren Rossi, senior Jen Bower, and senior Andrea Sauers all totaled two RBI while sophomore Courtney Smith, junior Julie Harmon, freshman Rebecca Malaga, and sophomore Jenna Pollard all contributed one RBI apiece.

The Lakers continue their trip through North Carolina tomorrow when they travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to compete against Chowan University. The twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
