Ryan Lund scored late in the second, but it was not enough as the Lakers lost a 4-1 decision to Lynn University in the NCAA National Tournament Semifinals on Thursday at Blanchard Park. The Lakers finished the season with a record of 17-6-1 as their nine game-winning streak came to an end. Lynn continues on to the National Championship game to be held on Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m.
Lynn came out strong, caught the defense off guard and scored in the first 36 seconds of the match. Julian Halder received a pass from Heiko Eberhardt and scored in the upper right corner of the net for his tenth goal of the season. The match remained 1-0 until Halder scored again at the 31:40 mark into the match. He was assisted by forward Jack Winter.
Lynn outshot the Lakers eight to two in the first half, and increased the lead to a 17 to five margin. The Lakers out-cornered Lynn five to four throughout the entire 90:00.
The Fighting Knights extended their lead after breakaway goals from Winter and Anthony Desperito at the 58:29 and 80:23 marks of the match.
Lund scored the only Laker goal at with a little over eight minutes left to break Lynn's shutot effort. The defensemen from South Euclid, Ohio scored his fourth goal this season off a header from
Dane Rimko. Rimko crossed the ball in front of the net for Lund to find the bottom left corner of the goal.
"I just told myself out there that I am going to get my head on this ball," Lund said, "Dane played that ball which was a great ball. It was too late, but at least we got on the board."
Goaltender
Mikko Sarkkinen finished his season 4-1-0, making five stops on nine shots on goal. Matt DiCerbo (18-2-1) made two saves on three shots while in net for Lynn.
The Lakers accomplished several highlights in the 2012 season, winning both the regular season and playoff championships in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and making their fourth NCAA Final Four appearance. The last appearance before today came 10 years ago. Head Coach
