ERIE, Pa. - The fifth-ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team scored five goals in just over eight minutes during the first period and cruised to an 8-1 victory over #10 Minnesota State-Mankato on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers improved to 7-1-1 in the season while the Mavericks dropped to 4-3-2 in their season.

Stephanie DeSutter started off the barrage at the 5:37 mark of the opening period, when she let go of a shot from the point that Maverick starting goaltender Danielle Butters never saw. Sophomore

Lauren Jones then scored her first goal of the season at 9:11, with Bram and junior
Christine Bestland collecting the assists. Then, sophomore
Molly Byrne scored a power play goal just 36 seconds later to extend the lead to three. Bestland and freshman Jenna Dingledein had the helpers.
Junior
Christie Cicero scored her fifth goal of the season at 13:08, with freshmen
Lauren Kilroy and
Kathy Donohue picking up the helpers. That prompted the Mavericks to make a change in goal, with Erin Krichiver takeing over for Butters, who stopped just six-of-ten shots in just over 13 minutes. Janiga greeted Krichiver rudely when she scored 34 seconds after the switch was made. Bestland and Bram had the assists.
In the first period the Lakers outshot the Mavericks 17-9. Mercyhurst was one for six on the power-play, scoring the only goal in the first.
Cicero scored her second goal of the night at the 6:19 mark of the second period. Seniors
Jenna Hendrikx and
Gina Buquet had the assists. Jones came back and scored three minutes later, her second goal of the game, to extend the lead to seven goals. Dingledein and Kilroy had the assists
The Mavericks would finally solve sophomore goaltender
Amanda Makela at the 16:58 mark of the second on a power-play goal by Lauren Smith, making it her fifth goal of the season. She was assisted by Emilia Anderson and Kathleen Rogan.
Bram would end the scoring at the 18:22 mark of the second period with her third goal of the season. Janiga and Dingeldein had the assists. The Lakers headed to the locker room with a seven goal lead, and would hold that throughout the third.
Bram finished the night with a goal and three assists while Janiga had a goal and two helpers. Dingledein and Bestland had three assists in the victory.
The Lakers outshot the Mavericks 42-18 for the contest. The Mavericks were 1-for-4 on their power-play opportunities, while the Lakers went 1-for-6.
Sophomore
Amanda Makela (3-1-1) played the entire 60:00 in net, making 17 saves and allowing one goal. Danielle Butters (4-3-2) made six saves and allowed four. Krichiver made 28 saves in 46:52, allowing four goals.
The two teams meet again on Saturday afternoon, October 27 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Puck drops at 1:00 p.m.
