Special Teams Lead Lakers to 6-3 Victory Over Providence

ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst women's hockey team scored four power-play goals and killed off all of Providence's power-play opportunities in a 6-3 win over the Friars on Friday night.  Junior Christie Cicero and sophomore Molly Byrne led the Lakers with two goals apiece.
 
The first period of the game was scoreless as the Lakers outshot Providence nine to eight.  Sophomore Vaila Higson, freshman Jenna Dingeldein and Byrne all had two shots on goal heading into the locker room.
 
The second period would be full of scoring opportunities.  1:17 into the second the Lakers would have a five on three after two back to back penalties from Providence.  Byrne would score the first power-play goal of the night one minute into the five on three.  Higson scored her first goal of the season :43 seconds later, off of a rotation from sophomore Caroline Luczak and Dingeldein. 
 
The Friars freshman Molly Illkainen was the first to get her team on the board at 16:33, making the score 2-1.  Byrne scored her second goal of the night on another power-play goal at 19:01, but Providence answered back quickly by junior Rebecca Morse at 19:25 to bring her team to a one-goal trail behind the Lakers heading into the third.
 
Freshman Emily Janiga scored her sixth goal of the season off another power-play goal at 4:19 in the third period.  She was assisted by senior Jenna Hendrikx and Byrne.  Ten minutes later, Providence would score, shortening the Lakers lead to 4-3 when sophomore Allison Micheletti scored her first goal of the season. 
 
The Lakers scored two late goals in the third to extend the lead to 6-3.  Senior assistant captain Gina Buquet gave Cicero a centering pass in front of Providence's net to score at 17:02.  Providence would pull their goalie with 1:35 left in the contest, however Cicero scored on their empty net at 19:48.
 
Mercyhurst had a total of 39 shots to Providence's 27.  The Lakers were four for five on the power-play, taking 14 shots on net.  Providence was stopped on all six power-play chances, taking nine shots.
 
Sophomore Amanda Makela started and played the entire 60:00 in net for the Lakers, she improves to 2-0-1 making 24 saves on 27 shots on net.  Freshman Sarah Bryant falls to 1-0-1, making 33 saves for the Friars.
 
Senior captain Christine Bestland is currently on a five game point streak, recording two assists and jumping to 12 points this season.  Byrne score two goals and had one assists on ten shots.  Dingeldein and Hendrikx both had two assists apiece.
 
 
The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
