PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Lakers walk away with a 1-1 record after the first day of action in Pembroke, N.C. Mercyhurst took Belmont Abbey down in what was a 33-8 whopping but dropped their next match against No.6 UNC-Pembroke, 25-8.
Against the Crusaders the Lakers took eight of 10 matches including one fall and three major decisions. Michael Baxter was credited with the fall at 4:05 of his match. Freshman Ryan Bohince contributed a major decision win over Shane Summerlin, 9-1. Eric Fulmer continued his winning ways with a 14-0 major decision win at the 184lb class. Junior Fred Hale shut down his opponent with a 10-1 major decision win.
Nick Hannan, Shane Foster and redshirt sophomore Jordan Shields all took home decision wins over their Crusader opponent. Clint Schaefer lost to Jake Varilek the No.4 grappler in division II in his 165-pound match-up.
In the second match of the day the Lakers took on the Braves in a match that the Braves won convincingly. Mercyhurst lost their first three matches to go down 10-0. They would respond b y winning at the 147lb and 157lb classes but would drop their next four. Bohince kicked the match off, losing to the No.1 grappler in division II. The 125-pounder lost by a technical fall at 4:18.
Robert Blotzer, Shane Foster and Nathan Sharp all picked up wins in the second match of the day. Foster won by a 3-2 decision, Blotzer by a 9-4 decision and Sharp would wrestle to 2-1 decision win. Of the seven losses five of the losses were to regionally ranked opponents.
