ERIE, Pa. --
Molly Marsh scored twice for the Lakers and
Gabrielle Catrabone added three assists as the Mercyhurst College women's soccer team posted a 4-1 win over Davis & Elkins.
The Lakers (2-0) improved to 4-0 against the Senators (0-1) all-time and nearly registered their second consecutive shutout before Davis & Elkins' Bonnie Little erased the clean sheet in the final minute at 89:11.
Freshman
Aina Torres recorded her first collegiate goal to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage, chipping in 20-yard shot from Catrabone into the south end net at 16:08.
Then, in what has become a signature of this squad in its first two games, Mercyhurst wasted little time putting another tally on the board as
Molly Marsh's shot found the top right corner of the goal three minutes later (19:09).
The 2-0 halftime lead would hold for most of the game until Marsh connected in the 73rd minute (72:35) on an unassisted goal from the east side of the field into the north net.
Paige McDowell quickly made it a 4-0 advantage when she gained possession of the ball on the west side and patrolled down the field to just outside the box and ripped a top shelf goal at 73:36.
Working mainly in their own offensive end, the Lakers had an 11-3 advantage in shots in the first period but never truly threatened outside of the first two goals. In the second half, the Lakers threatened to score on nearly all seven shots.
Defensively, the Lakers survived an initial push from Davis & Elkins in the first 15 minutes and went on to control play for the majority of the first half as they limited the Senators to just three shots.
Rachel Griepsma went the distance and recorded her second-straight win in the net for the Lakers while her counterpart Brenna Tillman took the loss. Tillman allowed four goals and made five saves in nearly 75 minutes of work with Jess Coleman also action in goal.
Notes:
The Lakers have posted 11 combined goals in the first two games of the year. That total is the highest since the 1994 season when Mercyhurst opened 19 goals in the first two contests of the year, winning 7-0 against Wheeling Jesuit and 12-0 against Charleston.
Catrabone's three assists are the most by a Lakers since Sept. 1, 2008 when
Jamie Schroter recorded four helpers in a 6-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown.
Seven different Lakers have scored a goal this season, with three of those also owning at least a goal and an assist.
