ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Mercyhurst College men's water polo team wrapped up its stay at the 2010 Navy Open Sunday afternoon with a 1-2 record.
After falling to Queens (N.Y.), 8-7, on Saturday, the Lakers captured their first victory of the 2010 season with a 5-3 win over George Washington Sunday morning before falling to 14th-ranked Navy, 15-8, later in the afternoon.
No statistics were available from the Queens (N.Y.) game.
Against George Washington, the Lakers used a stingy defense in securing their first victory over the Colonials since the 2008 season. Mercyhurst held leads of 2-1 after the first and 3-1 after the second before GW held a 1-0 edge in the third to make it a 4-2 game heading into the fourth.
The Colonials increased the pressure in the final stanza, pulling within a score, at 4-3, with less than three minutes to play. But as time wound down, sophomore
William Page gave the Lakers some added insurance, finding the back of the net with 1:25 showing on the clock.
Senior
Kane Ashton led Mercyhurst with two goals, while freshmen
Brett Luehman and
Colin McDonald added a goal apiece. Senior
Andy Sekulski recorded the win with seven saves, three steals and an assist.
Later in the day, the Lakers went toe-to-toe with the 14th-ranked Midshipmen, trailing 5-4 after the first, 8-6 after the second and 10-7 after the third before a 5-1 run in the finale secured the win for the home team.
Freshman
Danilo Svorcan anchored the Lakers with six of their eight goals. Ashton scored once and assisted on another, while sophomore
Adam Borgman rounded out the scorers with a single tally.
Sekulski suffered the loss in goal, stopping nine shots and recording three steals.
Mercyhurst returns to action this Friday, Sept. 10, when the Lakers face Collegiate Water Polo Association foe Washington & Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. in Washington, Pa.
