Lakers setback by Fighting Scots, 1-0

ERIE, Pa. -   The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive 1-0 loss today against fellow PSAC member Edinboro University. Edinboro didn't strike until the 61st minute of the game when Jess Morgan punched a ball into the net. With the loss it drops the Lakers to 2-4 in the PSAC conference and 5-4 overall on the year. Edinboro improves to 3-1-1 in the PSAC and 6-1-1 overall.
The first half was all about defense with both teams playing great against the offense. The first chance of a score came within the first minute of the game when freshmen Maria Antunez had a chance but struck the ball wide of the net. In the ninth minute junior Rachel Griepsma made a jumping save against a free kick that was sent toward her by Jamie Warren of Edinboro. Sophomore Sara Hawksworth, freshmen Gabrielle Catrabone, and freshmen Perrin Kern all took a shot during the 14th minute of the game but all came up empty handed as all the shots sailed wide of the goal.
Warren and Griepsma met again in the 25th minute of the game, as Griepsma saved a rifle shot by Warren to keep the score knotted up at zero. Junior Paige McDowell had the best opportunity the Lakers saw on the gloomy afternoon, when the Fighting Scotts faced a 3-on-3 against the front lines of the Lakers. Hawksworth led the attack and put the ball through two defenders to a wide open McDowell, McDowell unloaded but the shot flared right of the target.
The second half proved to be similar to the first, both teams played great defence and neither team would budge. Just 55 seconds into the second half Catherine Messmer of Edinboro shot at a open net but junior Renai Medeiros was there for a defensive kick save, the score remained tied at zero. In the 61st minute of the game Cassee Kiplinger of the Fighting Scots made a long throw-in toward the box, the ball turned up loose only to be found by No.10 Jess Morgan who punched the ball into the nylon for the only score of the game. The Lakers made a run towards the end of the game but the defense of Edinboro stepped up as well, evening out the effort put towards by Mercyhurst.
The Lakers held the shot advantage (7-4) in the first half but Edinboro took that advantage (9-5) in the second half. In the game Edinboro also held the advantage when it came to corner kicks, 6-2.
Goal keeper Griepsma made six saves on the afternoon giving her 46 saves on the year, her record is now set at 5-4-0, going into Wednesday's match against PSAC member East Stroudsburg.
The Lakers look to bounce back after a setback of three games against, East Stroudsburg who is 2-4-1 overall this season and carry a 1-4-0 record from PSAC play. The two teams will meet at Mercyhurst Soccer Field this Wednesday September 29th at 3 p.m. For live stats placeclick here.
