ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team put together another non-conference victory today after beating the University of Findlay, 2-1, in a very defensive minded game. The win gives the Lakers a 6-0-1 record while dropping the Oilers to a 1-5-1 record.
Late in the 17
th minute, junior
Eric Steinmetz ripped a shot at Findlay's goal keeper who saved the shot, but wasn't so lucky as the ball deflected forward giving sophomore
Matias Karioja the chance to head it home for his second goal of the season. Steinmetz is credited for the assist making it his first of the season.
With only 15 seconds to spare before the break, senior
Dean Atkins took a shot only to be saved by goal keeper
Alex Jurek. The save did not deter Atkins as he jumped on the rebound heading the ball past the outstretched goalie for what turned out to be the game winner and his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Laker defense played stellar today against Findlay, minus one hiccup in the 51st minute of the game. Gary Brown of Findlay ripped a shot from 30 yards out that was deflected before the ball found the back of the net.
Mercyhurst out shot Findlay 15-1 in the first half and again 12-1 in the second half, giving them a 27-2 advantage for the afternoon. The squad also held the advantage when it came to corner kicks, 10-2. Although Findlay had minimal opportunities they kept it close by making their shots count and had the help of seven saves out of nine shots on goal.
The win goes to sophomore
Diego Gustin giving him six wins on the season and giving him an overall record of 6-0-1. The loss goes to goal keeper Matthew Brooks making him 1-3-0 on the season.
The Lakers (6-0-1) are back in action at home this Sunday (Sept. 26) against the Dragons of Tiffin University (3-3-0). The Lakers lost their last match to Tiffin, but hold an all-time advantage, beating the Dragons in three out of four meetings.
