Water Polo Wins Third Straight, Downs Gannon, 10-9

ERIE, Pa. – Six different players found the back of the net as the Mercyhurst College men's water polo team secured its third straight victory Friday evening, downing cross-town and conference rival Gannon, 10-9, in front of a packed house at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. With the win, the Lakers improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association play.

Senior Kane Ashton led the attack with two goals and three assists. Sophomore William Page, junior Josh Rodriguez and freshman Brett Luehmann all scored twice, while second-year driver Adam Borgman and freshman Danilo Svorcan each tallied once.

Sophomore Ian Tasman increased his team-leading assist total to 19 with a hat trick of helpers and moved his club-best steals mark to 24, taking away the ball four times.

Mercyhurst built a sizable advantage after both teams finished the first quarter in a 2-2 tie, outscoring Gannon 6-4 in the second and 2-0 in the third.

Despite holding the four-goal advantage, at 10-6, going into the fourth, Mercyhurst had to survive a scare as the Golden Knights caught fire with three consecutive goals and held the Laker offense scoreless.

After the home team pulled within one at the 2:31 mark, the Lakers started to regain control, forcing several turnovers before freshman Colin McDonald sealed the win with a steal near the center of the pool with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Senior Andy Sekulski, the reigning CWPA Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week, shined in net again, recording 17 saves for his fourth consecutive game of 10 or more stops. He now has 99 saves on the season to go along with a 5-3 record.

Mercyhurst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, with a trio of games at Penn State Behrend. The Lakers face the host Lions at 11 a.m. before taking on Notre Dame College at 4:30 p.m. and Salem International at 6 p.m.
