CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College Lakers could not manage to get past the No.20-ranked California Vulcans in Saturday's matchup. The Lakers scored an early goal but the Vulcans came out in the second period firing away scoring five unanswered goals by five different players.
During the 17th minute, junior Molly Marsh scored her fourth goal of the season when she put an unassisted ball into the back of the net. The Vulcans opened the floodgates in the 55th minute when Kayla Klimasko scored her first goal of the season. They added four more goals in the 56th, 68th, 70th and in the 89th minute of play.
The Lakers lacked offense shooting the ball only 12 times during the match compared to a Vulcan 25. California (Pa.) also held a corner kick advantage with 12 while the Lakers managed two. California (Pa.) scored double the goals in which the Lakers have allowed all season in today's (Sept.18) matchup. The last time the Lakers have given up five goals was on September 7th, 2007 against Ferris State. The Lakers lost that matchup 5-4.
Junior goal keeper Rachel Griepsma had a total of eight saves on a day where she saw 13 shots on goal. After the set back her record stands at 5-2 while the opposing keeper Paula Jackson's record is 5-0-1.
The Lakers look to bounce back on September 22 against Clarion University at Clarion. Clarion has earned a 1-3-1 record this season and the game is set for a 7 p.m. start time.
