CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a pair of late goals from senior
Kane Ashton, the Mercyhurst College men's water polo team saw its chance at knocking off Fordham slip away as the Rams defeated the Lakers, 5-4, in sudden-victory overtime Friday evening at the 2010 ECAC Championship.
Fordham scored the deciding goal with just 44 seconds elapsed in the second overtime session after Ashton brought the Lakers back twice in the final four minutes of regulation.
Trailing 3-2, Ashton scored his first goal to even the slate at the 3:55 mark. Following another Fordham score goal just 27 seconds later, he tied it again, this time finding the back of the net with 2:12 showing on the clock. It was the fourth time the score was tied, with both teams playing to a 1-1 draw after the first and a 2-2 score at the end of the third.
Along with Ashton, junior
Josh Rodriguez and sophomores
William Page and
Ian Tasman got on the score sheet. Rodriguez and Page scored a goal apiece, while Tasman dished out three assists.
Senior
Andy Sekulski suffered the loss in net, stopping a season-high 19 shots. He now stands at 2-3 on the season.
Mercyhurst resumes play at the ECAC Championship with a game against host Harvard on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 3:40 p.m.
