ERIE, Pa. – In a physical battle that saw six yellow cards and two penalty kicks issued, the Mercyhurst College men's soccer team used a three-goal run to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and defeat Shippensburg, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Tullio Field.
Graduate student
Christoph Hampel, senior
Dean Atkins and junior
Alex Manea all scored for the Lakers, who now move to 3-0-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.
After falling behind on a Shippensburg penalty-kick goal in the 16th minute, Mercyhurst rallied back, scoring a goal less than 10 minutes later to tie game, before securing the win with a pair tallies in the second.
Hampel evened the slate during the 26th minute of play when he gave Ship a taste of its own medicine, scoring on a penalty kick after a foul in Raider territory.
The score would remain intact until the Lakers caught fire later in the second half. Sophomore
Austin Solomon helped MC take a 2-1 lead with a great play that set up Atkins for his third goal of the season at the 55:35 mark.
Manea then capped the game off with an insurance tally at 79:55, knocking in the ball on a sliding attempt set up by sophomore
Matias Karioja.
Mercyhurst controlled the pace of game despite constant rough play. The Lakers held an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corners. Sophomore netminder
Diego Gustin earned the win with eight saves while Ship's Andrew Foran took the loss with the same amount.
