HILLBURN, N.Y. – The fourth-ranked Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 20-13 victory over East Coast Conference opponent Dominican (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon in Hillburn, N.Y.
The Lakers, standing at 13-1, will now await word from the NCAA selection committee to see if they are awarded an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Division II Lacrosse Tournament. Selections will be announced Sunday, May 9, at 10 p.m. on CBS College Sports.
Mercyhurst bounced back from its first loss of the season with a balanced attack that saw six players record at least four points in the contest, including freshman
Brian Scheetz, who led all players with four goals and four assists.
Sophomore
Kyle Kallay scored three goals and added four assists, senior
Tyler Burton reeled off four goals and an assist, and senior
Michael Sciulli netted three goals and helped out on two others.
Senior
Todd Richardson tallied two goals and two assists, and junior
Trevor Rice scored once and dished out three helpers.
Junior
Kevin Coholan contributed two points with a goal and an assist, while senior
Derek Pino and freshman
Zac Reid rounded out the offense with a goal apiece.
The Lakers controlled play in the first half, outscoring the Chargers 12-4, including 5-0 in the first quarter.
Dominican rebounded in the second half though, scoring eight of the next 10 goals to pull within two at 14-12 with 9:43 to play.
Mercyhurst, however, separated itself from the upset-minded Chargers in the final minutes, going on a 6-1 run to close out the game.
The Lakers outshot the Chargers, 50-29, for the game and held a 45-36 edge in ground balls. Junior
Michael Jeschawitz earned the win in goal with eight saves.
