Lakers Take Two at Lock Haven, Sweep Season Series

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College baseball team posted two victories at Lock Haven Saturday, April 3, extending its winning streak to five games. The Lakers won the first game, 6-2, followed by a 9-6 victory in the second contest.

Mercyhurst (15-13) improved to 10-6 in PSAC West play, while the Bald Eagles are now 8-18, 0-8 in divisional contests. The Lakers registered the season sweep, also defeating LHU twice Friday.

Jordan Backes earned a complete game victory in game one to improve to 4-2 on the season, while Joe Cochran notched his first victory as a Laker with four and two-thirds innings of relief work in the nightcap. Adam Gray paced the Lakers with five hits and four RBI on the day, and Greg Turk hit a home run in game two.

In the opener, the Lakers opened the scoring in the first when Craig Denman and Adam Gray provided RBI-singles, then added another run in the second when Trey Bennett's bunt-single scored Turk.

Turk scored another run in the sixth when his two-run homer also plated Bill Gerstenslager, increasing the Lakers lead to 5-2.  Mercyhurst added its final run in the seventh when Denman singled and came around to score on a Lock Haven error.

Turk finished the opener 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Denman went 3-for-4 and Gray and Bennett each finished with two hits.

In the nightcap, the Lakers rallied from a 3-0 deficit behind a three-run third inning and a four-run fourth inning.

Gray started the rally with a two-RBI single, pushing across Denman and Kenny WalrondBill Gerstenslager added the tying run with his RBI-single, plated Ethan Santora.

In the fourth, the Lakers took advantage of three of the Bald Eagles five errors in the contest as Bennett's RBI-double and Jonathan Keppler's single provided the only hits of the inning.

The Lakers return to action on Wednesday when they host Lake Erie College in a non-conference matchup.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
