SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A grand slam by Slippery Rock's Adam Jury in the bottom of the sixth highlighted a nine-run inning in which The Rock erased a 5-2 Mercyhurst lead to take an 11-5 victory in the first half of a twinbill Friday afternoon. The two teams played one-half inning of game two before it was halted due to inclement weather.
The two teams will play each other in the regularly-scheduled doubleheader on Saturday, April 17 at Mercyhurst, then resume the halted game at Slippery Rock on Sunday. Both start times are 1 p.m.
Mercyhurst (19-18, 10-7 PSAC West) countered Slippery Rock's early 1-0 lead with two runs in the top of the second on
Adam Gray's RBI-single and
Greg Turk's sacrifice fly.
Slippery Rock added a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lakers again were able to rebound in the next frame as
Kevin McCall's 2-RBI triple scored
Adam Schlessel and
Craig Denman.
Mercyhurst was able to add another run in the top of the sixth for a 5-2 advantage when Gray scored on a wild pitch.
However, The Rock erupted in the bottom of sixth behind Jury's grand slam and four RBI-singles as SRU collected eight hits in the frame.
Gray earned the loss for the Lakers, facing five batters in the sixth before reliever
Eric Aschley finished out the inning. Gray allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits while striking out two. Aschley allowed four runs, two earned.
