Lakers Dominate the Golden Knights, 7-1

Senior Jamie Schroter netted two goals, leading the Lakers to a 7-1 win over Gannon University
ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team ended their season on a two game winning streak as they beat Gannon University today (Oct.29), 7-1. Mercyhurst ends the season with an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-9-1 record in PSAC play. The win against Gannon marks the 23rd time since 1987 the Lakers have won.
There was no lack of action in today's contest as Mercyhurst scored seven times while Gannon managed only one goal. Senior Jamie Schroter netted her first two goals of the season today while senior Megan Shields netted her first collegiate goal in her last game as a Laker.
During the first half of today's game the Lakers outshot the Golden Knights nine to five and were outgained in corners, 2-1. The Lakers kicked things off in the 25th minute when Schroter centered a corner kick to sophomore Sara Hawksworth who blasted it past the Gannon goal keeper for the score. Hawksworth's tally marks her fourth goal of the season. 10 minutes later at the 35:28 mark, freshman Gabrielle Catrabone received a cross from Molly Marsh then lobbed the ball over the goalies head into the back of the net, for her third goal of the season. Gannon helped the 'Hurst out in the 38th minute when they experienced a miscommunication and scored on their own net. The goal gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead going into the half.
Mercyhurst kept the offensive assault going as they shot the ball 11 times compared to Gannon's eight. The teams were even on corners, 1-1.  It took Mercyhurst 17 minutes but they finally broke through the gates of the Golden Knights. Junior Renai Medeiros opened the floodgates in the second half when she took a pass from junior Paige McDowell and rifled it pass the goalie into the top left corner of the goal for her second goal of the season. In the 71st minute set piece specialist Schroter set up for a free kick that was 35 yards out from the goal. Schroter then scored her first goal of the season on a ball that only stopped because it hit the back of the net. Schroter struck again for her second of the game, just eight minutes later when she scored directly off of a corner kick, marking her second tally of the game and of the year.
Amanda Sharbaugh of Gannon finally broke junior Rachel Griepsma's shutout up when Mercyhurst committed a foul inside the box. The Golden Knights were awarded a penalty kick, Sharbaugh took the kick and netted Gannon's lone goal as she beat Griepsma to the left side of the net. In the 88th minute Shields dribbled around a defender and struck a ball high, the ball landed over the goalies head and rolled into the back of the net, awarding Shields with her first collegiate netter.
Goal keeper Griepsma ends the 2010 campaign with an 8-9-1 record while saving 91 shots on goal. Gannon's freshman goal keeper Sarah Geffel who allowed four second half goals receives her first loss of her career and holds a 0-1-0 record on the year.
This game concludes the Lakers 2010 season, a season in which the team finished with an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-9-1 record in conference play. Schroter now ranks No.2 all-time in assists at Mercyhurst with 36 total helpers. This is the first year that Mercyhurst has not qualified for the PSAC tournament since they were introduced to the conference in 2008.
