ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College men's water polo team won its ninth straight game and claimed the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division-West Region Regular-Season title with an 18-6 win over Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center.
Standing at 7-0 in conference play, the Lakers separated themselves from second-place Gannon, which has a 3-2 record with three games remaining. It marks their third straight outright title after sharing it in 2007.
The Lakers outscored the Lions 9-4 through the first half before unleashing nine more goals in the second.
Twelve different players scored for the Lakers, including freshman
Danilo Svorcan, who led the offense with three goals. Senior
Alex Moggridge, sophomore
William Page and freshmen
Justin Deis,
Craig Hennessey and
Tye Schreiber each added two goals.
Junior
Josh Rodriguez, sophomores
Adam Borgman and
Luis Solis, and freshmen
Brett Luehmann,
Joseph Burke and
Colin McDonald rounded out the offense with a goal apiece.
No goalkeeper statistics were available from the game.
Mercyhurst closes out its conference schedule on Sunday, Oct. 3, against Washington & Jefferson at the Junker Center. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
