ERIE, Pa. --
Ben Jennings and
Gerald Anderson combined for 257 yards and three touchdowns as Mercyhurst College rolled to a 45-15 win against Cheyney in front of 1,073 fans at Tullio Field.
With the win, the Lakers move to 1-1 on the season while Cheyney falls to 0-2.
After holding Cheyney to zero yards and a three-and-out on the game's opening series, the Lakers offense caught fire on its own opening drive and never ran out of steam as Jennings rumbled in from eight yards out for the game's first score, capping an eight-play, 56 yard drive.
Mercyhurst used a steady ground game to grind down the Wolves as seven of the Lakers first eight plays came via the rush.
All told, Mercyhurst racked up 294 yards rushing en route to the highest ground game total since posting 330 yards rushing against Lock Haven on Oct. 4th, 2008. Despite finding themselves down 7-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the opening quarter, the Wolves quickly responded to knot the score as Ron Hunter's 60-yard run highlighted a three-play, 78-yard drive that took just 58 seconds.
However, the Laker defense stood strong and would not allow another Cheyney score until 6:57 remaining in the game when Angel Rodriquez scampered in from 1-yard out to complete a four-play, 69-yard drive on the Wolves next to last series of the game.
After Cheyney's opening score, it was all Mercyhurst as the Lakers reeled off 38 unanswered points.
Freshman running back
Marquis Harrell caught a three-yard pass from
Joe Laffey to make the score 14-7 before Anderson posted back-to-back touchdowns, his first a 1-yard run and his second a 23-yard run.
Paris Bruner's 11-yard strike from Laffey made the score 35-7 and
Josh Harold's 19-yard field goal split the uprights. Harrell's 5-yard run completed the Lakers scoring with 8:46 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Jennings finished with 149 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown while Anderson recorded 108 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
