ERIE, Pa. -- The No. 28 Mercyhurst College baseball team will continue its season this week after its selection to the NCAA II Atlantic Region Tournament, as announced by the NCAA II Baseball Committee.
One of 48 teams from across the nation that were selected to postseason play, the Lakers (35-15) are seeded fourth in the six-team double-elimination tournament that will take place on May 14-18 at Kutztown University. The winner of the regional advances to the NCAA II World Series on May 23-30 at the USA Baseball National Trainingn Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
PSAC champion and No. 8 West Chester earned the region's top seed followed by host institution Kutztown. WVIAC champion Shepherd takes the No. 3 seed while fellow WVIAC members West Virginia St. and Concord round out the field.
The last time Mercyhurst advanced to the NCAA postseason came in 2000 when current head coach
Joe Spano was in his first season at the helm. In that year, he guided the Lakers to a 35-18-1 overall record, 24-6-1 in the GLIAC, but fell in the first two games of the double-elimination Midwest Regional Tournament.
Mercyhurst looks for its first NCAA victory since 1996 when the Lakers defeated Lewis in the first round, 5-3.
Prior to this season, Mercyhurst had qualified for NCAA postseason play on six different occasions and own an all-time record of 2-12.
