LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College baseball team split a doubleheader at Lock Haven, falling the first game 1-0 before rallying to win the second contest, 4-2.
Mercyhurst (15-10, 7-3 PSAC West) was held to three hits by LHU hurler Andrew Simonik, with Jonathan Dziomba, Jeff Stoll and Jonathan Keppler recording a hit each.
Steve Grife went the distance for the Lakers and took the loss, allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out six and walking three.
The Bald Eagles (9-17, 4-2 PSAC West) scored their lone run in the bottom of the second when Jeramie Cook doubled home Mike McCamly, who had reached on an error.
In the nightcap, the Lakers wasted no time getting runs on the board, pushing one across to begin the game and adding three more in the top of the second.
After a walk to Keppler, Ethan Santora singled to advance Keppler to third and Stoll followed with a sacrifice fly for the first score.
In the fourth, a two-out rally started with Kenny Walrond's single, followed by a walk from Keppler. Jamie Walczak then doubled home both runs before Santora singled home Walczak for the Lakers final run.
Lock Haven answered with one run in the fourth and another in the bottom of the sixth but it would not be enough as starter Nick Gillung went the distance, scattering six hits while striking out four Bald Eagles. Josh Rote took the loss for LHU, giving up four earned runs on six hits and walking two in just 1 2/3 innings.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, March 28 when they host Lock Haven for another doubleheader at Mercyhurst to complete the weekend series.
