ERIE, Pa. -- In their first action of the spring, the Mercyhurst men's and women's tennis teams started the season against Division III powerhouse Carnegie Mellon.
The nationally-ranked Tartans proved to be formidable opponents, with the No. 8-ranked women handing the Lakers a 9-0 defeat while the No. 20-ranked men handed Mercyhurst a 7-2 loss.
Tim Hansson turned in a solid performance for the Laker men as the No. 1 singles player pulled off a thrilling 7-5, 6-7 (5), (9) win and then partnered with Ronald Heurich at No. 2 doubles for a 9-8 (3) victory.
The Laker women now sit at 4-2 on the year while the men move to 5-2 overall. Mercyhurst returns to action next Saturday, February 14th at 2 p.m. against Walsh College at the Westwood Racquet Club.
