ERIE, Pa. – No. 11 Mercyhurst stretched undefeated streak to nine as the Lakers defeated No. 16 Kutztown, 21-17, and American International, 47-0, as part of a quad meet with Gannon University at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Against No. 16 Kutztown, the Lakers picked up a key victory at 184 lbs by
Tim McAndrew and heavyweight
Nathan Sharp posted a come-from-behind in the meet's deciding match as Mercyhurst defeated the Golden Bears, 21-17.
The shutout against AIC marked the first since 2006-07 when the Lakers defeated Anderson, 51-0.
To start the Kutztown match up,
Payne Lint cruised to victory over the Golden Bears Clayton Youtz, 20-7, before
Michael Baxter improved to 24-12 on the year after posting a technical fall over Chad Emerick, 18-0.
The Lakers then dropped the next two weight classes with Kutztown's John Paukovits posting an 11-3 major decision over
James Henderson and Brett Martinez recording a fall over
Lenny Calhoun at 2:18 to give the Golden Bears a 10-9 advantage.
Another matchup of regionally-ranked wrestlers came at 157 lbs, with Mercyhurst's
Andy Lamancusa and Kutztown's Chris Chambers, both ranked No. 5 in the East Region. Lamancusa held a 4-1 lead heading into the second period and stretched his lead to 8-3 to start the third period before finishing out the bout with an 11-4 victory.
The Lakers reclaimed the scoring lead thanks to Lamancusa's victory, then stretched it to 15-10 after
Josh Shields posted a 5-0 victory over David Zeek. Shields, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 165 lbs, improved to 19-3 overall with his win over the East Region's second-ranked grappler.
At 174 lbs, Sonny Flood recorded a 9-2 decision over
Pat Carter to bring the Golden Bears within one point, 15-14, with three matches remaining.
At 184 lbs, McAndrew turned in a tough performance to take away a 4-1 victory over Eric Sergent, increasing the team score to 18-14.
Scott Snyder defeated the Lakers
Matt Mix, 10-6, to send the Golden Bears into the final match just one point behind in the team scoring, 18-17.
In the decisive heavyweight bout, the Golden Bears Kevin Bolinsky took a 3-1 lead before Sharp posted a takedown with 59 second remaining in the second. The East Region's sixth-ranked heavyweight, Bolinsky then countered with an escape to take the 4-3 lead heading into the third period. In that final period, Sharp executed for the Lakers, adding an escape to tie the match and a takedown with 20 seconds left for a lead he would not relinquish to give the Lakers the team victory.
Against American International, the Lakers began with a major decision by Lint and then posted falls at three straight weight classes, beginning with
Lance Pitcel at 149 lbs, to cruise easily to their seventh-straight victory.
Mercyhurst is now 8-0-1 in their last nine meets and can tie the program record for the longest undefeated streak with a win or tie in their final dual meet against Findlay on Friday, February 13th at the MAC. The 2006-07 edition owns the program record for consecutive victories (9) and longest undefeated streak (10) when they closed out the season with nine wins and a tie in the final dual meet against UPJ.
