ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's hockey team scored a season-high eight goals as the top-ranked Lakers disposed of ECAC opponent Colgate, 8-3, on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Keyed by special teams play, Mercyhurst scored four goals on the power play (4-for-10) and added two more with a skater in the penalty box, improving its nation-leading, short-handed goal total to eight. The Lakers held the Raiders scoreless on nine power-play attempts.
Three players combined for 12 points, highlighted by a three-goal, one-assist effort from sophomore
Bailey Bram. Juniors
Vicki Bendus and
Jesse Scanzano each added a goal and three assists.
Junior
Ashley Cockell scored twice to set a new career-high with eight goals in a season.
Mercyhurst built itself a 6-1 lead through the first two periods of play. Bram started the scoring with her first of the evening on the power play at 12:34. After a strike from Colgate's Hannah Milan to tie the game at 13:07, Mercyhurst found its stride with an even-strength marker from Cockell at 15:39 and another extra-man score from Bram at 19:33.
Following the intermission, the Lakers added three more goals courtesy of Cockell, freshman
Samantha Watt and Bendus. Cockell gave the home team a 4-1 advantage when she picked off a pass coming out of the penalty box and skated in for an unassisted goal at the 8:10 mark. Watt then made it 5-1 less than a minute later on the power play at 9:07. Bendus finished the frame with a short-handed goal at the 19:04 mark.
Both teams exchanged goals to close out the game in the third. Bram completed her hat trick with a goal on the penalty kill at 2:47 while Scanzano made the score 8-3 on the power play at 17:42.
