Mercyhurst Downs Tiffin, 2-1

Box Score

Tiffin, Ohio – Freshman forward Austin Solomon struck twice during the second half at Tiffin, as the Mercyhurst men's soccer team came from behind for a 2-1 victory Oct. 21.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Lakers generated several offensive chances during the second half. Tiffin countered with offense of its own, as one Dragon shot hit the crossbar and went wide. Midway through the second half, Mercyhurst capitalized on a turnover to earn the equalizer. Nicholas Thompson settled the ball in the midfield, then touched a pass through to Austin Solomon, whose shot went off of the post and into the net to tie the score at 1-1 at the 63:17 mark.

After Billy Colton was fouled, he found Dean Atkins with a quickly-taken free kick. Atkins then slid the ball to Solomon, who went through two defenders and beat the keeper with a deft shot that tucked inside the right post. Solomon's fourth goal of the season gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead at 73:40.

Mercyhurst stymied Tiffin's offense the rest of the way. Tiffin did not attempt a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes of the match, and the Lakers posted a 2-1 come-from-behind win.

Each team attempted eight shots during the match, and Mercyhurst held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercyhurst took 10 corners to Tiffin's one.

Laker keeper Diego Gustin made two saves while recording his 11th win of the season. Tiffin's Jef Frisch allowed two goals while registering one save.

Mercyhurst improves to 12-4 on the season, while the Dragons drop to 10-3-1 overall.

Tiffin got off to an early lead, scoring less than 15 minutes into the match. Dragon defender Roger Kummer blasted a long ball in the box. Two opposing players challenged for the ball, which caromed off of Rhys Cannella and into the net at 14:34. Mercyhurst held possession for extended periods of time during the first half, earning close chances and corner kicks.

The Lakers and Dragons each attempted four shots during the first half, with Tiffin placing three shots on goal to Mercyhurst's one.

Solomon is the fifth Laker to score two goals in a game this season, joining Colton, Christoph Hampel, Paul Neill and Thompson in that category. This season marks the first time five Lakers have posted multiple-goal games during the same season since 2004, when Mercyhurst went 14-3-2.

Thompson's assist gave him a team-leading six during the 2009 season. His six assists are the most for a Laker since Kurt Young recorded nine helpers during 2007.

Mercyhurst next plays at cross town rival Gannon Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The Lakers won the first meeting this season, 2-0 Sept. 30. Live stats will be available during Saturday's match at Gannon.
