Lock Haven, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC West with a 4-1 victory Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Lock Haven.
Taylor Hilinski and
Jamie Schroter notched goals in the first half, while
Jamie Laturell and
Danielle Braun struck during the second session.
With the win, the Lakers are now 9-4-1, 6-2-1 in PSAC West play. Mercyhurst is tied with Cal (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.) for first in the PSAC West. The Lady Eagles fall to 3-9-1, 2-6-1 in divisional games with the loss.
As in their first meeting, the Lakers dominated early. During the 13th minute,
Danielle Braun sent a cross into the box which
Taylor Hilinski headed into the net from in tight for a 1-0 Mercyhurst advantage. The goal was Hilinski's eighth on the season.
The Lady Eagles equalized 20 minutes later when Arielle Gordon bent a shot from 22 yards into the net, knotting the score at 1-1 at the 33:23 mark.
Mercyhurst seized momentum late in the first half, when
Jamie Schroter laced a free kick from 42 yards that eluded the keeper, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead at 40:07. Schroter's goal was her second in as many games.
The Lakers outshot Lock Haven 8-4 during the first half, including 4-3 in shots on goal.
Holding a 2-1 advantage after 45 minutes, the Lakers continued to apply pressure offensively, generating numerous chances while limiting Lock Haven's possession. Mercyhurst outshot LHU 14-4, including 5-2 in shots on target during the second half. Shortly after halftime,
Jamie Laturell gave the Lakers an insurance goal, converting a
Karla Vogt cross into her fourth goal of the season and a two-goal edge at 49:40.
Braun scored a goal in the 83rd minute, providing the final score of 4-1. She dribbled the ball into the box, and fired a shot off of the crossbar and into the net. The Lakers finished off the match with the last four shots of the match, and posted a convincing 4-1 conference victory.
For the match, the Lakers held a 22-8 advantage in shots and 9-5 in shots on target. Each team attempted three shots.
Rachel Griepsma and
Amanda John split time in the Laker net, with each posting two saves. Kim Bentley and Hayley Zinn each allowed two goals for the Eagles.
Braun posted a career-best three points Wednesday, giving her a four-game point scoring streak with three goals and one assist for seven points during the past four games. Laturell has scored a goal in three of the last four contests.
Hilinski has now scored 37 goals and 85 points in her career.
Schroter has scored a goal off of a free kick in each of the last two games, and has scored six points on two goals and two assists in the last three games.
The Lakers next play at California (Pa.) Saturday, with a 12 p.m. kickoff. The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but has been changed due to Homecoming activities at Cal U. Mercyhurst beat the Vulcans 3-2 in their last meeting, Sept. 12.
