Lakers Defeat Huskies 4-0 For 10th Win of Season

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team notched four goals in a 10-minute span during the first half of its 4-0 victory over PSAC East foe Bloomsburg Saturday, Oct. 10 at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Billy Colton scored twice, while Paul Neill and Eric Steinmetz each struck for the Lakers. Diego Gustin and Ryan Wagner combined for the Lakers' sixth shutout of the season.

Mercyhurst improves to 10-3 on the season, while the Huskies are now 6-4-2. The Lakers have now posted 10 or more wins in a season 21 times in their history.

The game began with each team focusing on defense and possession. The Lakers broke through in the 25th minute, and  by the 35 minute mark had built a 4-0 lead. Billy Colton got the Lakers on the score sheet at 24:43 when he took a through-ball from Arash Fahandezh and broke in on goal, beating the Bloomsburg keeper near post for a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Paul Neill gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead, as he rifled a shot past David Leiendecker for his fifth goal of the season. David Miller played a quick touch through to Neill for the goal at 26:43.

During the 32nd minute, Eric Steinmetz scored his first career goal, as his shot from in tight found the back of the net, with Miller recording his second assist of the contest.

The Lakers added a fourth goal during the 35th minute, capping a remarkable 10-minute span of offense. Nicholas Thompson found Billy Colton in space with a long through ball. Colton cut to the middle before firing in his second goal of the match for a 4-0 Mercyhurst advantage at 34:43. The strike gave Colton seven for the season.

Mercyhurst took a 4-0 lead into halftime, having four out of seven shots on goal during the first 45 minutes. The Lakers outshot the Huskies 12-10 during the first half.

Holding a 4-0 lead after 45 minutes, the Lakers played possession soccer while still generating quality scoring chances. Mercyhurst placed three more shots on target during the second half, as did Bloomsburg. Ryan Wagner stopped all three shots he faced in the second half, and the Lakers had a 4-0 shutout victory.

For the game, Mercyhurst outshot Bloomsburg 19-15, including 10-6 in shots on goal. Each team attempted three corner kicks.

Mercyhurst keepers Diego Gustin and Wagner each recorded three saves, splitting the game evenly for the clean sheet. Leiendecker made six saves in the loss.

The Lakers matched their highest single-game goal total of the season with four Saturday. The team also registered 4-0 shutout wins over Cal (Pa.) and the Univ. of D.C. Mercyhurst also scored four first-half goals in the win over UDC Sept. 17.

Colton registered two or more goals for the 11th time in his career. He is now in fourth place all-time in program history with 37 goals. He passed Jason Pedra into sixth place in career scoring with 78 points.

Thompson now has scored at least one point in nine out of 10 home games. Also, Miller's two-assist performance was the first multiple assist game for a Laker since Kurt young scored two goals and dished out two helpers in a 5-3 victory over Findlay Oct. 12, 2007.

Mercyhurst travels to California (Pa.) Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. for a PSAC West match. The Lakers defeated the Vulcans 4-0 Sept. 11 at Mercyhurst Soccer Field
