Powell Scores 50th Career Goal In Win Over Pitt-Johnstown

The Lakers improved to 2-0 in the early going of the 2008 season.
Johnstown, Pa. –Sarah Powell scored her 50th career goal and Jamie Schroter recorded a career-high four assists as the No. 21 Mercyhurst College women's soccer team overwhelmed Pitt-Johnstown 6-0 Monday afternoon in the squad's second road contest in a row to start the year.

The Lakers (2-0-0) controlled play throughout the match, outshooting the Mountain Cats (0-2-0) 31-6, including 14-1 in shots on goal.

Senior forward Sarah Powell opened the scoring for Mercyhurst in the 32nd minute, as her shot made it past Mountain Cat goalkeeper Aubrey Mauger. Schroter assisted on each of the Lakers' first four goals.

The score remained 1-0 in Mercyhurst's favor at halftime.

The Lakers used a three-goal, seven minute outburst of scoring early in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Taylor Hilinski scored two goals within a three minute span (58:12 and 61:36) to provide Mercyhurst with a 3-0 cushion. The goals were Hilinski's second and third for the 2008 season. In the 59th minute, Hilinski blasted a shot past Mauger, and scored off of a serve from midfield by Schroter less than three minutes later to make it 3-0.

Following the second Hilinski marker, Lisa Melander headed in a corner kick by Schroter at 64:54, her second goal on the season, giving Mercyhurst a four goal lead.

In the 78th minute, Lindsey Meyer scored her second career goal off a rebound, assisted by senior transfer Stacey Litz. Ironically, Meyer's first career goal came a year ago against Pitt-Johnstown in a 6-0 Laker victory.

Hailee Maiorano capped off the scoring in the 86th minute, taking a pass from Jenna Tutolo and blasting a point-blank shot into the net, making it 6-0.

The Laker defense proved stingy, allowing only one shot to reach goalkeeper Rebecca Heintzman, who made one save for her 17th career shutout.

The Mercyhurst women's soccer team heads to California (Pa.) this Wednesday to open the PSAC West schedule against the Vulcans. Kickoff will be at 4:00 p.m.
