West Chester, Pa. - Despite scoring two game-tying goals, the Mercyhurst women's soccer team lost 3-2 at No. 9 West Chester Saturday.
The Golden Rams' Sarah Oswald scored on a breakaway in the 77th minute to break the 2-2 tie. Oswald's goal, her eighth of the season, proved to be the game-winner for West Chester, who remains unbeaten at 9-0-1. Mercyhurst is now 6-3-2 on the season.
Earlier in the second half, with her team trailing 2-1, Sarah Powell scored the equalizer at 64:18, assisted by
Taylor Hilinski, as the Lakers responded once again. Powell's goal was her team-leading ninth of 2008 and fourth in the last three matches.
The match started off with a flurry of quick goals, as the first 13:07 saw three tallies in a back-and-forth fashion.
Brittany Yetter scored two minutes and one second into the match to give the Golden Rams a brief 1-0 advantage. The goal, Yetter's fifth on the season, was unassisted as she received a breakaway and shot the ball past keeper Rebecca Heintzman.
Jamie Schroter lined up a corner kick in the 11
th minute, and buried the kick directly into the net for her second goal on the season, tying the match at 1-1. Schroter has scored both of her goals directly from corner kicks.
Oswald's first goal of the match came at the 13:07 mark on an unassisted breakaway goal, giving West Chester a 2-1 led that it would carry into halftime.
For the match, West Chester narrowly outshot Mercyhurst, 9-8, including 7-5 in shots on goal. The Lakers held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Mercyhurst takes the pitch Tuesday at home in PSAC West action against California (Pa.). The match begins at 4 p.m.
