Houghton, N.Y. – The No. 21 Mercyhurst College men's soccer team conceded two second-half tallies and was defeated 2-0 Saturday night at Houghton.
Mercyhurst is now 7-3-2 on the season, while Houghton improves to 7-5-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Lakers surrendered a goal midway through the second half, as the Highlanders' Jonathan Brooks bent a free kick around the wall and into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute.
The Lakers pressed offensively but were unable to notch the equalizer despite several close chances.
Houghton added an insurance marker late in the second half as Austin Beck sent in a cross that Steve Grudda headed past goalkeeper Danny Mudd, giving the Highlanders a two-goal lead which they would not relinquish. Grudda's goal came in the 87th minute.
The Lakers were outshot 15-11 for the match, including 10-5 in shots on goal.
Mercyhurst plays host to former GLIAC rival Findlay Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
