Boston, Mass. - The No. 5 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team overcame a 2-0 second period deficit in turning back Boston University, 4-2, Friday night on the Terriers' home ice. It was the opening game of the season for the Lakers while BU dropped to 1-2.
BU senior forward Gina Kearns scored both a power play goal and a shorthanded marker in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the middle frame to stake the Terriers to a 2-0 advantage. Both goals came against freshman
Hillary Pattenden, who was making her Mercyhurst and collegiate debut.
But the Lakers regrouped and tied the contest with power play goals by senior
Hayley McMeekin at 5:03 and freshman
Jess Jones at 9:39. Both goals were assisted by sophomore winger
Vicki Bendus.
Freshman forward
Bailey Bram cashed her first collegiate goal at 2:55 of the third. The lamplighter, which proved to be the game-winner, was unassisted.
Sophomore forward
Jesse Scanzano concluded the scoring with a goal at 13:38. Scanzano was helped by freshman defender
Pamela Zgoda.
Mercyhurst outshot the Terriers 38-18, including an 18-3 margin in the second when each team scored twice.
Pattenden turned aside 16 shots in picking up her first win in a Mercyhurst uniform while junior Melissa Haber took the loss.
Mercyhurst finished 2-for-5 on the power play while BU wound up 1 -for-5. The Lakers improved to 6-4 in season-opening games including a 5-2 record on the road.
Mercyhurst, which took two games from the Terriers last season in Erie, improved to 3-0 in the overall series. The two teams conclude the weekend set with a 2 p.m. game Saturday.
