ERIE, Pa. -- Three Lakers -- August Mizia, Francis Mizia and Andrew Welton -- won individual region championships as the seventh-ranked Mercyhurst wrestling team placed third in the NCAA Division II Super One Regional, which finished Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. As a team, the Lakers scored 109 points, qualifying the the NCAA Championships, while five MU competitors qualified for singles competition at Nationals.

No. 1-ranked Pittsburgh-Johnston won the team championship with 155 1/2 points while third-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) was runner-up with 143.

Welton (285), August Mizia (174) and Francis Mizia (165) went 2-0 during Saturday's competition to earn their region titles. Willie Bohince (125) and Jeremy Landowski (149) were runners-up, but still punched their tickets to NCAAs.

Welton, seeded third in his weight class, claimed a pair of major decisions. He defeated Long Island-Post's James Louison (seven-seed), 13-0, before finishing with a 10-1 victory over Kutztown's Ryan Appleby (four-seed).

August Mizia had two decision victories at 174. The top seed in his class, he bested Notre Dame's Roberto Rivera (four-seed), 11-4, and then handled UPJ's John Blankenship (two-seed) in the final, 9-3.

Francis Mizia, the three-seed at 165, won a pair of close matches over the two higher seeds for his triumph. He defeated Gannon's Nathaniel Ross (two-seed), 5-4, in a tiebreaker before winning a 7-5 sudden victory in the title match over UPJ's Tyler Reinhart (one-seed).

Top-seed Bohince fell in the 125-pound championship match. He defeated Notre Dame's Jacob Goodwin (five-seed) by decision, 5-4, but then fell to UPJ's Evan Link (two-seed) by major decision, 11-2.

Landowski went 1-1 as well at 149, but did not suffer his loss on the mat. He major decisions Kutztown's Joe Esposito, 11-3, before taking a forfeit loss to Notre Dame's Isaac Dulgarian. With a spot at Nationals already clinched, Landowski chose to forego the championship match.

In other action on Saturday, Kevin Kinyua went 2-2 at the 133 class, falling one win short of a bid to Nationals himself as he lost in the fourth-place match.

The Lakers will compete next at the NCAA Championships on Mar. 11-12 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
