Women's Tennis Shines at Binghamton Championships

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst women's tennis team competed Sept. 25-27 at the Binghamton Championships, hosted by Binghamton University. Chicago State, FDU, LeMoyne, LIU, New Haven, Stonehill and Wagner also took part. Eight Lakers played in a flighted format. Horn-Bourque won the C flight title, and Davis, Kryuchkova and Shakratova each reached the final in their flights.

Singles
Horn-Bourque won the C flight as the third seed. She beat Stonehill's Piper Remillard 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, then rallied past second-seeded Pierina Lescher of New Haven 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 in a match tiebreak in the semifinals. In Sunday's final, she topped top-seeded Sophie Popescu of Binghamton 6-3, 7-5.

Davis reached the E flight final. She upset top-seeded Hannah FitzGerald of Wagner 6-0, 7-6 in the quarterfinals, then beat New Haven's Micaela Rosignuolo 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. In the final, she took the first set 6-4 before falling 6-3, 10-7 in a match tiebreak to third-seeded Samantha Jaros of Binghamton. White also reached the E flight semifinals. She rallied past second-seeded Maia Warlies Paredes of Chicago State 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 in the quarterfinals, then lost 6-0, 6-3 to Jaros.

In B flight, Kryuchkova, the top seed, beat Stonehill's Arya Chabria 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 in the quarterfinals. LeMoyne's Naila Krifa retired trailing 6-4, 4-1 in the semifinals. In the final, Kryuchkova took the first set 6-1 against second-seeded Katsiaryna Kostsina of FDU before falling 6-4, 10-6 in a match tiebreak.

Shakratova, the top seed in G flight, beat fourth-seeded Victoria Chioreanu of New Haven 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. She then lost 6-3, 7-6 to third-seeded Adelie Wilson of Binghamton in the final. Gray's quarterfinal against Wilson ended in a walkover.

In A flight, Rogova, the third seed, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chicago State's Camila Sanchez in the round of 16. She lost 7-5, 7-6 to FDU's Oleksandra Ovsiienko in the quarterfinals. Rogova bounced back with a 6-0, 6-1 win over FDU's Julia Fix in the North semifinals to reach the final. In D flight, Jacobs lost 6-3, 6-4 to second-seeded Lilia Raiss of LeMoyne in the quarterfinals.

Doubles
Rogova and Kryuchkova, the eighth seeds in A flight, opened with a 6-3 win over Binghamton's Clara Arbeloa Lopez and Nitya Vyas. They fell 7-5 to second-seeded Stonehill pair Lilah Shallcross and Chabria in the quarterfinals. They then beat Binghamton's Popescu and Michelle Rosenblit 6-3 in the North semifinals to reach the final.

White and Jacobs, the third seeds in C flight, lost 6-3 to Chicago State's Danira N'Dengoue and Verona Fitzgerald Madigan in the quarterfinals. They bounced back to win the West final over fourth-seeded Stonehill pair Elsa Seippel and Luciana Caputi Intriago, 6-2. In B flight, Horn-Bourque and Davis lost 6-3 to top-seeded Wilson and Angel Walia of Binghamton in the quarterfinals. They beat LeMoyne's Greta Baerlund and Raiss 7-5 in the West semifinals to reach the final.

The Lakers next compete at the ITA Championships on October 15-20th in Princeton, N.J.
