Lakers Prepare to Host Niagara & Go on the Road Against Le Moyne

The Mercyhurst baseball team is set to play four games this week with one at home against Niagara and three on the road against Le Moyne.  The Lakers play the Purple Eagles on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Game one against the Dolphins is on Friday at 3 p.m. Game two is at 1 p.m., while game three is at 12 p.m.
 
Previous Results
The Lakers are 8-17 on the year thus far. Last week, they lost a matchup against Pittsburgh and won all three games in their series against conference opponent New Haven. The Lakers scored 31 runs, with contributions coming from graduate student Ranciel Ventura. In game one, he went 3-5 and hit a home run. Junior Luke Babcock made a difference in game three, with a go-ahead three-run homerun in the eighth inning, helping the Lakers take a 4-3 victory.
 
Matchup History
This matchup against the Purple Eagles will be the first since March 25, 2025, where the Lakers lost 14-9. Their matchup history dates back all the way to April 1, 1983, and Niagara is 5-4 all time against Mercyhurst.
 
This matchup against the Dolphins will be the first since May 11, 2025, where the Lakers won 4-2. Graduate student Jayden Walker went 2-3 including a home run and a walk for Mercyhurst. Ventura also played a factor in this game, going 2-4. Mercyhurst is 4-1 all-time against Le Moyne.
 
Batting Leaders
Senior Zachary Kourous leads all batters with a .357 batting average and a 1.011 OPS. His ability to get on base for the Lakers has been very crucial for the team. He is third in the NEC with three triples and 10th in the conference with 12 stolen bases. Freshman Dana Williams has also been able to get on base frequently for the Lakers. His team leading 19 walks helped the Lakers rally against New Haven. Williams is also 10th in the NEC with four home runs.
 
Pitching Leaders
Junior Matthew Delvaux pitched a complete game in game one against New Haven, giving up six hits on three runs and six strikeouts. He leads the NEC in opposing batting average with .235 and his 5.26 ERA is eighth in the conference.
 
Sophomore Nate Vargo pitched eight innings in game two against New Haven, giving up two runs on five hits and two strikeout. He is ninth in the NEC with a 5.75 ERA and his 26 strikeouts are tied for first on the Lakers with teammate Delvaux.
 
A Closer Look: Niagara
  • The Purple Eagles are 11-13 to start the year, including wins against Portland, Merrimack and NJIT.
  • Infielder Jacob Brooks leads the team with a .320 batting average, and is tied for first with 33 hits.
  • Catcher/outfielder Rees Kozar has a .303 batting average, and leads the team with 16 RBI's.
  • Pitcher Nate Bennett leads the team with a 1.80 ERA. He also leads the team with 32 strikeouts.
 
A Closer Look: Le Moyne
  • The Dolphins are 8-17 to start the year, including matchups against North Carolina, James Madison and Binghamton.
  • Utilityman Jack Cannon leads the team with a .434 batting average. He also leads the team in hits with 46 and doubles with nine.
  • Pitcher AJ Petraitis leads the team with 22 strikeouts.
