Lakers Gear Up Midweek Game at Kent State; Host FDU for Three-Game Series

The Mercyhurst baseball team is set to play four games this week with one on the road against Kent State and three at home against FDU. The Lakers play the Golden Flashes on Wednesday at 5 p.m. while they play a three-game series against the Knights starting Friday at 3 p.m. They'll play game two on Saturday at 1 p.m. and game three on Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
Previous Results
The Lakers are 13-20 on the year. Last week, they lost their midweek matchup against Kent State with a final score of 14-2. Graduate student Zac Evenson got his first hit as a Laker with an RBI-single. Sophomore Zach Black scored the other run of the game with a solo home run that went off of the foul pole.
 
Last weekend at UMES, Mercyhurst was able to sweep winning game one 14-0, game two 6-5, and 14-1 in game three. Junior Matthew Delvaux pitched a seven inning complete game in game one, giving up five hits and striking out six. In game two, junior Nolan Kirsh kept the Lakers in the match with stellar pitching. He pitched 6.1 innings and gave up one run and two hits, while striking out six. In game three, freshman Logan Koslin went 4-for-4, including a two-run single and an RBI-double.
 
Matchup History
This will be the Lakers' second matchup in two weeks against the Golden Flashes, and fourth overall. Kent State leads the series 3-0.
 
FDU leads Mercyhurst 2-1, with the first matchup coming on April 17, 2025. The Lakers won that game 10-6. Graduate student Jayden Walker went 1-for-3 in the game and hit a solo home run. In their most recent matchup, FDU won a high scoring 18-15 matchup against Mercyhurst where both teams combined for 31 hits in the game. Graduate student Ranciel Ventura hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Walker hit a grand slam in the sixth. The two look to pick up their offensive momentum where they left off.
 
Batting Leaders
Kourous leads the Lakers with a .371 batting average, which also ranks eighth in the NEC. He also leads the Lakers with 69 total bases, which is 10th overall in the conference. He was a key contributor to the team's offense in game one against UMES, going 2-for-5, including a three-run home run and a two-run double. Junior Luke Babcock is second on the Lakers with a .287 batting average. He has an active nine-game hitting streak and against UMES, he went 4-for-10, and got a RBI in all three games.
 
Pitching Leaders
Junior Andrew Malec leads the Lakers and the NEC with a 4.41 ERA. In game three against UMES, he pitched six innings, giving up one run on two hits, with four strikeouts. Opponents are batting .209 against him, which is also ranked first in the NEC. Delvaux is second on the Lakers with a 5.19 ERA, which is sixth in the NEC. His performance against UMES led to him getting the win, pushing his record to 4-3. His four wins are ranked seventh in the NEC.
 
A Closer Look: Kent State
  • Kent State opened their season 28-10, including matchups against Akron, LSU and St. Bonaventure. They are ranked first in the MAC.
  • Utilityman Sawyer Solitaria is tied for first on the team with a .320 batting average. He also leads the team with 10 home runs, which is fifth in the MAC.
  • Infielder Reese Ripken is also tied for first with a .320 batting average. He has a .578 slugging percentage, which is 12th in the MAC.
  • Pitcher Ciaran Caughey leads the Golden Flashes with a 4.50 ERA which is 13th in the MAC. He has 53 strikeouts this season, which is ninth in the MAC.
 
A Closer Look: FDU
  • FDU opened their season 23-15, including matchups against St. John's, Georgetown and Dartmouth. They are ranked first in the NEC.
  • First baseman Jeremy Delamota leads the Knights with a .376 batting average, which is sixth in the NEC.
  • Infielder Johnathan Gomez is second on the team with a .373 batting average, which is seventh in the NEC. He leads the NEC with 57 hits as well.
  • Two-way player Jeremy Cheeseman is third on the team with a .323 batting average. He also has a 6.44 ERA along with 29 strikeouts, which ranks second on the team.
