Kourous' 11 Total Bases Leads Lakers To Victory Against Coppin State

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. — Mercyhurst secured a 12-7 victory over Coppin State on Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Lakers' offense was highlighted by two home runs and three triples, contributing to their 13-hit performance.

Mercyhurst opened the game with a strong first inning. Zachary Kourous tripled to left center, setting the stage for Riley Ames, who doubled down the right field line to bring Kourous home. Jayden Walker then singled to center field, scoring Ames. Ranciel Ventura reached first on a throwing error that allowed Walker to score, giving the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Coppin State responded with three runs in their half, tying the game at 3-3 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Lakers regained the lead. Ames singled and stole second before Walker walked. Luke Babcock delivered a homer down the right field line, bringing in three runs. Coppin State managed two runs during their turn, bringing the score to 6-5 in favor of the Green and Blue after two innings.

The third inning saw the Lakers extend their lead with a three-run homer by Kourous, scoring Aaron Keating and Logan Koslin, who had reached base earlier in the inning. Mercyhurst led 9-5 after the third inning.

The game remained scoreless through the middle innings, with neither team able to add to their tally in innings four through eight.

In the ninth inning, Mercyhurst added insurance runs. Mike Samarin tripled to left center and scored on a single by Koslin, who later scored on Kourous's second triple of the game. The Lakers closed the inning with a 12-5 lead. Coppin State scored two runs in their half, but it was not enough to catch the Lakers, resulting in a final score of 12-7 in favor of Mercyhurst.

Noah Ehlers started on the mound for the Green and Blue, pitching one inning and allowing five earned runs on three hits, with five walks and two strikeouts. Zac Evenson was a standout in relief, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight batters while issuing only one walk. Mitch Harder contributed with two innings pitched, giving up two earned runs on two hits, including a home run, while striking out five batters. Evenson's performance was crucial, achieving a 0.83 WHIP and securing the win.

Kourous recorded four hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Ames collected three hits and stole three bases, contributing two runs. Babcock added a home run and three RBIs while drawing two walks.

Looking ahead, the Lakers are set to host Central Michigan at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10 at Mercyhurst Baseball Field in Erie, Pennsylvania.
