Mercyhurst Ready for Big Week

4/3/2025 12:45:00 PM

Erie, Pa.- Mercyhurst is set to get back on the road for some NEC action this weekend against LIU after going 3-1 last week. After their time in Long Island, they'll return home for a game against Niagara. The Lakers have had hot bats across the board as they tallied 45 hits over their last four games. They had three players earn NEC weekly honors as Eric Chorba was named co-player of the week and Jacob Bazala and Jayden Walker were named Prime Performers.

On the Diamond:
The Lakers made history last week with their sweep of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. It was their first sweep of a Division I opponent and an NEC opponent. In the series, Chorba hit walk offs in back-to-back games. He hit a solo home run to help Mercyhurst take game one of the series and an RBI single to take game two. Chorba and Walker each hit three home runs in the series, including two each in the 10-4 win in game three. In that game, Mercyhurst hit a season-high seven home runs. The Lakers offensive success led to a total of 23 runs over three games, the second most in a series so far this year. Now they're searching to get back above .500 in conference play for the first time since they were 1-0 in conference play.

Scouting LIU:
LIU has put together solid season to this point. They hold a 12-16 record and are 6-3 in conference play. They've picked up two series victories, with one coming over Wagner and the other over Delaware State. Jack Power has lived up to his last name as he's knocked 11 homers halfway through the season. He's one of two players to have 20 or more RBIs to this point. The other is Joseph Durso, who has 20 RBIs and three home runs. Justin DeCastro has led the Sharks on the mound with a 5.58 ERA and a 3-3 record in seven appearances.

Scouting Niagara:
The Lakers fell to Niagara just a couple of weeks ago. Niagara pulled out a comeback victory in which they scored 10 runs in one inning. They've posted an 8-15 record so far and their win over Mercyhurst launched them to a four-game winning streak as they walk into their weekend series against Quinnipiac. The Lakers will be looking to shut down their top hitters, Jacob Brooks, Nate Milk and Curtis McKay. The trio has combined for a total of 79 hits, eight home runs and 51 RBIs.

Next Game:
The Lakers will be on the road for NEC action this weekend. They'll start the weekend with a doubleheader against LIU on Friday with games at 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. All the action can be caught on the NEC Front Row.
