Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa.- Mercyhurst took a three hour trip to the Steel City on Wednesday for their first ever matchup with Pitt. The Lakers took a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning, but the Panthers scored 16 straight runs. It was the Lakers first true road game against a Power Four opponent.
Â
How it Happened:
The Lakers kicked off the game with some fireworks in Pittsburgh. They got two free passes to start the game before
Eric Chorba hit in the first run of the game with an RBI single.
Landon DiBeradin followed it up three batters later with a two RBI single of his own.
Casey Smith then took advantage of a pitching change with a bases loaded walk that earned him an RBI.
Chris Juchno immediately followed things with another two RBI single as the Lakers brought six runs across the plate before Pitt finally got out of the first inning.
Â
But the Panthers slowly crawled back in the matchup. They grabbed their first run of the game in the second inning after Sebastian Pisacreta scored on a wild pitch. They then had back-to-back three run innings. Despite scoring six runs over two innings, they tallied just four hits between the innings. The Lakers looked like they were going to escape the fourth with the lead, but an error helped Pitt extend the inning and eventually take the lead.
Â
In the fifth inning, the Panthers hit three straight two out home runs as they extended their lead to 11-6. Jayden Melendez capped off the inning with a three-run shot before the Lakers finally ended the fifth inning. The Panthers tacked on one run in the sixth inning before they closed things out with a mercy rule win in the seventh inning.
