Teaneck, NJ – Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse held off a late surge from NEC opponent FDU to secure a nail-biting 11-10 victory on the road Saturday afternoon. The Lakers controlled much of the game, fending off a fourth-quarter rally to clinch their second straight conference win.
How it Happened
FDU opened the scoring in the first quarter, but the Lakers responded with authority. Whitley Easton netted two goals, as well as a score from Amanda Bailey to put Mercyhurst ahead 3-1. FDU managed to sneak in a late goal to close the gap, but the Lakers held a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Mercyhurst came out firing to start the second. Emma Cimino struck first, and Ellie Schau followed up to push the lead to 5-2. The Knights responded with two goals of their own, but Schau found the back of the net again to send the Lakers into halftime up 6-4.
The momentum carried into the third as Bailey opened the second half with her second goal of the day, extending the lead to 7-4. Though FDU scored to trim the deficit, Mercyhurst countered with three more goals — one each from Meghan Nasman, Easton, and another from Nasman — to make it 10-6. FDU added one late to end the third quarter with the Lakers still up 10-7.
Easton came through once more in the fourth, completing her four-goal outing and stretching the lead to 11-7. FDU made things interesting down the stretch, scoring three unanswered goals to pull within one. But Mercyhurst's defense held strong in the final moments to secure the 11-10 victory.
