Clinton, S.C. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Lacrosse team battled in a high-scoring thriller but came up just short, falling 20-19 to Presbyterian on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers mounted a strong comeback in the fourth quarter but were unable to complete the rally as Kenzie Partsch's fifth goal of the game proved to be the difference.
How It Happened:
The first quarter set the tone for a fast-paced game, with both teams trading goals. Emma Cimino, Marlee Antinora, Whitley Easton, and Ellie Schau found the net for Mercyhurst, but Presbyterian held a 6-5 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The Lakers continued to battle in the second quarter, tying the game 6-6 on a goal from Meghan Nasman before Presbyterian answered back with two quick strikes. Hannah Young and Easton responded with back-to-back goals to even things up once again, but the Blue Hose held on for a 10-9 lead at halftime.
Mercyhurst kept pace in the third quarter as Keira Mangels, Nasman, and Cimino added goals to keep the game within striking distance. However, Presbyterian capitalized on key possessions, outscoring the Lakers 5-4 in the frame to take a 15-13 lead into the final quarter.
The Lakers refused to go down without a fight, as Antinora, Nasman, and Easton each found the back of the net to pull Mercyhurst within 19-18 with under four minutes to play. However, Partsch sealed the win for Presbyterian with a late goal at 3:02, and despite Easton scoring again with 2:01 left, the Lakers were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.
