Erie, PA – Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse earned their first-ever Division I win and their first Northeast Conference victory, defeating Howard University 15-13 in an exciting contest.
How it Happened
Howard struck first, scoring the opening goal of the game. However, Mercyhurst quickly responded as Marlee Antinora tied it up 1-1. Meghan Nasman then put the Lakers ahead with a goal shortly after. Howard regained the lead with two more goals, but Mercyhurst answered with goals from Ellie Schau and Meghan Nasman to put the Lakers ahead 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams exchanging goals. Mercyhurst came out strong, scoring three straight goals at the beginning of the period, with contributions from Hannah Young, Emma Cimino, and Amanda Bailey. Howard kept the game close, netting six goals to even the score at 9-9 by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lakers took control, scoring the first three goals of the half. Whitley Easton contributed two of those goals, with Amanda Bailey adding another. Howard scored once, but Hannah Young also scored in the third, helping Mercyhurst outscore Howard 4-1 in the quarter to take a 13-10 lead heading into the final frame.
The Lakers continued their strong play in the fourth, with goals from Whitley Easton and Maggie Sheehan. Howard added three more goals, but it wasn't enough, as Mercyhurst held on for the 15-13 victory.
