Mercyhurst Drops Contest in Niles

3/18/2025 9:50:00 PM

Box Score Niles, Oh.- Mercyhurst fell in their first of two meetings against Youngstown State on Tuesday evening. The Lakers fell 15-5, but they had 10 hits and had the lead in the second inning before Youngstown State took control of the ball game. Mercyhurst has 10 nonconference games left, and they'll be looking to turn around their luck in those games.

How it Happened:
The Lakers struck first in the second inning after Ty Cupp batted in his first RBI of the season. Casey Smith then hit an RBI double to give them an early 2-0 lead. But in the bottom half of the inning, Mercyhurst allowed two runs to the Penguins who were able to score and load the bases without a hit. Brayden Kuriger gave the Penguins a lead they wouldn't surrender after he hit an RBI double of his own. Jay Wrona eventually drove him in to give them a 4-2 lead before the inning ended. The next inning Smith hit in his second RBI of the day to get one back for Mercyhurst. Brady Shannon extended the lead back to two in the bottom half of the frame though. In the fifth inning, the Penguins drove in three runs on just one hit as the Lakers continued to struggle with control. Joey Trivisonno got an RBI in the sixth, but a three-run blast from Kyle Fossum helped make the game 13-4. Ray Altmeyer scored in the seventh, but it was the final time the Lakers crossed the plate before Fossum kicked in the mercy rule to end the game in the seventh inning.

Next Game:
Mercyhurst will be on the road for a three-game series at Central Connecticut State this weekend. The series kicks off at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21st.
