Box Score Boiling Springs, NC.- Mercyhurst will still be searching for their first ever Division I win this weekend after they dropped a 2-0 contest in the series opener against Gardner-Webb. Senior
Aiden Kelly suffered his first loss of season despite an impressive outing that featured five strikeouts over five innings.
Â
How it Happened:
Ranciel Ventura picked up the first hit of the day after he singled on an 0-2 count, but Reid Bertram was able to close the top half of the first with back-to-back flyouts to center field. Ryan Kennell recorded the Bulldogs lone hit of the first inning before Lakers closed the inning with a double play. In the second inning, Landon Diber was only baserunner for Mercyhurst as he walked with two outs. But
Chandler Powell struck out swinging to leave him on base. Matt Ilgenfritz earned the Bulldogs second hit of the day, but once again they saw the inning end on a double play. Mercyhurst went down in order in the third as they continued to struggle to get things going. Gardner-Webb had their first real scoring threat of the day as they had the bases loaded with one out. But Kelly was once again able to get out of the jam unscathed.
Â
The only runs of the ball came in the fifth inning when Kennell recorded a sacrifice fly to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Lawson Knight gave the Bulldogs some insurance after he scored on an error at shortstop.
Eric Chorba continued his impressive start to the season as he reached base on a single in the sixth. It was the last time Mercyhurst had a hit until Chorba recorded another single in the ninth. But the Bulldogs pulled out the win after Jayden Walke hit into a double play.
