2/20/2025 11:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa.- Mercyhurst Baseball is getting set for their first ever series at the Division I level after they kicked off their season last weekend. The Lakers were unable to grab a win in their opening weekend, but they'll be looking to make history in Boiling Springs, NC. by grabbing their first ever Division I victory.

Lakers Rolling:
Mercyhurst saw some solid play that they can build on as they continue their first season at the Division I level. Senior Aiden Kelly got the opening day nod on the mound, and he struck out four batters in 4.0 innings. Brandon Arnold led the way in strikeouts last weekend with six in his first game of the season. On the offensive side of things, Eric Chorba had a great opening weekend. Chorba was named a Prime Performer after he batted .364 through the first three games. He recorded four hits including a double and a home run. Ranciel Ventura also hit .364 and had two extra base hits. The duo will look to continue their hot start as they take on Gardner-Webb.

Scouting Gardner-Webb:
Gardner-Webb is coming into the series at 2-3. The Bulldogs lost three of four in their opening weekend series against St. Bonaventure. They were able to bounce back with a 12-2 win against Davidson on Tuesday. Now they'll welcome Mercyhurst to town as they finish off their nine-game homestand. Garrett Macias is leading the way offensively for the Bulldogs. He's hitting .444, but Dale Francis Jr. is hitting .412 with two home runs. The Lakers will need to slow down the Gardner-Webb offense to pull out their first Division I win.
Next Game:
The series kicks off tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. as the Lakers will begin a four-game series in North Carolina. They'll have a double header on Saturday with games at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. before they wrap things up on Sunday at noon.
