Box Score Charleston, SC.- Mercyhurst kicked off their first ever Division I season on Friday with a 5-3 loss to UMass Lowell. The Lakers opened the game with a 3-0 lead before they allowed five straight runs. The game was the first of three games for Mercyhurst this opening weekend.
Â
How it Happened:
Mercyhurst wasted no time putting their first run of the season the board.
Eric Chorba opened the season with an eight pitch at-bat that finished with a single. UMass Lowell's starting pitcher battled back as he struck a pair, but thanks to two errors, Chorba was able to get Mercyhurst on the board. Senior
Aiden Kelly got the opening day start on the mound for the Lakers and had an impressive outing as he went 3.1 innings before allowing his first hit of the day. But the play on the field was sloppy on both sides as they kicked off the 2025 campaign. The sides each had two errors in the first inning of play.
Â
Mercyhurst was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead after a
Chandler Powell single brought home
Casey Smith and
Ranciel Ventura in the top half of the fourth inning. UMass Lowell had an answer though as Brandon Fish homered to make it a 3-1 game. Fish was just a triple away from hitting for the cycle in the opening game of the season. Fish's homer was the only run that Kelly allowed as he left the game after 4.0 innings. He allowed just four hits and had one earned run.
Â
UMass Lowell tied the game in the sixth inning as
Daniel Thomas walked in two runs, with both walks being four pitch walks. In the seventh inning, Fish gave UMass Lowell the lead as he earned his second RBI of the day on a double that drove in Sean O'Leary. The River Hawks added some insurance in the eighth inning as Conor Kelly drove in Zachary Scott to give them a 5-3 lead. Nick Dirito closed the game out for UMass Lowell as he struck out the side to secure the River Hawks first win of the season.
