Laker Baseball Set to Kick off DI Era

2/13/2025 1:00:00 PM

Erie, Pa.- The Mercyhurst Baseball team is finally back in action tomorrow as they begin their first season at the Division I level. The Lakers will be led by second year head coach Jimmy Latona as they journey into a new conference. They'll kick off the season against UMass Lowell before taking on UAB and Maryland to close out the weekend.

Ready to Get on the Diamond:
Mercyhurst finished 21-20 a season ago as Coach Latona led the team for the first time. But that record included an impressive 18-10 record in PSAC play and a trip to the PSAC tournament. He'll be looking to help the Lakers replicate that success behind his upperclassmen. Seniors Chris Juchno, Jayden Walker and Aiden Kelly will look to lead the way as they navigate their first season in the NEC.

UMass Lowell is coming off a 24-31 year that included them dropping five of their last eight matchups. But they'll have their batting average leader Carlos Martinez and home run leader Alex Luccini back as they look to build off of last year. That quest will begin against the Division I newcomer, Mercyhurst.

The Lakers will then take on UAB, who will kick there season off against Maryland on Friday. They posted a 26-29 record last year, but their season included a win over Alabama, who ranked No. 18 at the time. They'll be looking for a strong start in 2025.

The Lakers will finish the weekend out against Maryland, who went 34-22 a season ago. The Terps are the lone Power Four team at the event, so they'll be looking to show dominance as they look to open the season with a winning record for the fourth straight season.

Next Game:
Action kicks off tomorrow in Charleston, S.C. at 12:00 p.m. as Mercyhurst officially kicks off the 2025 season. The Lakers follow it up with a game against UAB on Saturday, February 15th at 12:00 p.m. before closing the weekend against Maryland on Sunday, February 16th at 1:00 p.m.
