YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Mercyhurst opened its inaugural indoor season Friday at the YSU Icebreaker with standout debuts across sprints, distance events and the jumps, highlighted by a first-place finish in the men's unseeded high jump.
Freshman Jase Babcock delivered the program's first overall finish, taking first in the men's unseeded high jump at 1.89 meters. He also placed 31st in the long jump with a mark of 5.66 meters.
In the men's sprints, freshman Connor Stokes led the Lakers in the 60 meters, placing third overall in the qualifying round in 6.99 seconds. Junior Tyler Corbin finished 77th in qualifying at 7.53, while freshman Daniel Turner placed 92nd in 7.82.
Stokes also paced Mercyhurst in the 200m with a 15th place finish and a time of 22.50, also in the heat was Devin Easter coming in at 29th with a 22.85 and rounded out by Corbin's 74th place finish with 24.47.
Zachary Noble grabbed a top-five finish in the men's unseeded pole vault, with a 4.10m (5th).
Freshman Camden Pierce produced Mercyhurst's top middle-distance finish, placing 10th in the men's 800m in 1:58.15. In the men's 3,000 meters, freshman Thomas Gaydos finished 11th in 9:10.79, followed by Sawyer Bonnett who finished 19th with a 9:38.27.
Mercyhurst entered a deep group in the horizontal jumps: freshman Antonio Fleck placed 40th in the long jump with a distance of 5.07 meters, followed by Rowen Oakley in 43rd at 4.91 meters and Nicholas Barron in 44th at 4.72 meters.
In the shot put, Gannon McMaster led the way with a 31st place finish throwing 12.66 meters, Dominic Croce placed 59th at 7.92 meters, and Nicholas Publicover finished 55th with a mark of 9.44 meters.
On the women's side, freshman sprinter Emma Palmieri placed 33rd in the 400 meters in 1:01.47. Palmieri also placed 41st in the 200 meters in 27.32 and 38th in the 60 meters in 8.38.
Freshman Emma Valerio added a 61st-place finish in the 400 at 1:06.45, along with 71st in the 200m in 28.82, and 39th in the 60m at 8.40.
Freshman Rowan Milliron finished 22nd in the women's 3,000 meters in 11:42.11. Kennedy Butcher competed in the 60m hurdles and finished 34th with a 11.03, she also picked up a 83rd place finish in the 200m with a 30.07
In the field events, freshman Isabella Hagerman tied for sixth in the pole vault at 3.40 meters. Freshman Nickayla Petro placed 17th in the women's shot put with a mark of 10.64 meters, followed by Jordyn Barzano who threw a 6.55m at 42nd place.
