The Mercyhurst men's soccer team looks to inch closer to playoff qualification at home versus CCSU. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Saxon Stadium.
Previous Outings
Mercyhurst is 2-8-4 overall and 2-3-1 in the NEC. At the end of September, they opened conference play at LIU where they earned a point in a 0-0 draw. This was the Lakers third shutout of the season. They picked up their first win at home against Howard where they blanked the Bisons 3-0 on Senior Day. Then, they lost a thriller to Stonehill 3-2 and fell to Le Moyne 1-0. The Lakers have been on the up this past week. They closed non-conference play with a 2-2 last Tuesday draw vs Cleveland State. Most recently, Mercyhurst traveled to Chicago State and beat the Cougars 4-1.
The Lakers sit in eighth in the NEC standings. However, only two points separate fourth through eighth place.
Lakers to Look Out for
Alvar Silva has been one of the biggest offensive providers this season. Silva scored his first goal of the season early in the first half of the game at Pitt. Against Chicago State, Silva assisted two goals in the first five minutes off corner kicks. He then scored an open-play goal 20 minutes later to record a career-high three goal involvements in their 4-1 win. Silva recently earned NEC Prime Performer honors for these efforts. Benjamin Buckley is the Laker's leading scorer with three goals and is second on the team with seven shots on goal. Buckley scored a header versus Stonehill and a header at Chicago State. The Irish native also scored an outstanding free kick in a 2-2 draw versus Cleveland State. Buckley earned NEC Prime Performer honors after his two-goal week.
Gonzalo Onrubia has started between the posts for most of the Laker's games this season. Onrubia recorded nine saves and a clean sheet against LIU and was named an NEC Prime Performer after that game. The Getafe native also recorded five saves in a shutout at home against Howard.
Scouting CCSU
- The Blue Devils are 1-11-2 overall and 1-4-1 in NEC play.
- They opened the season on the road at UAlbany and fell 1-0.
- September proved to be a tough month as they lost to UConn, Merrimack, NJIT, Binghamton, UMass Lowell, and FDU.
- Their only point in September was a 2-2 draw at home versus VMI.
- Their first conference win came on the road as they defeated Chicago State 2-1.
- Alvaro Moros, Santiago Marin Gutierrez, and Anthony Catanzaro all lead the Blue Devils scoring column with two goals.
