Women’s Hockey Set to Host No. 8/9 UConn in Penultimate Non-Conference Weekend

The Mercyhurst women's hockey team looks to bounce back at home this weekend against No. 8/9 UConn. Puck drop for game one is at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 and it is also the Breast Cancer Awareness game. Game two is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. 
 
Previous Results
The Lakers are 3-5-0 this season and 0-2-0 in AHA play. They hosted No. 5/6 Minnesota Duluth in their first series. Game one ended 4-3 in overtime and game two ended 5-3. The second series was on the road at New Hampshire where they swept the Wildcats. Game one ended 3-2 and game two finished in a 4-0 shutout. The Lakers then hosted No. 10 St. Lawrence in a series split. The Lakers picked up their second shutout of the season in game one, 1-0, and dropped game two 3-0. Most recently, Mercyhurst played No.6 Penn State on the road. The Nittany Lions proved to the toughest opponent yet as they took the series 3-0 and 6-1. 
 
Matchup History
Mercyhurst is 8-1-2 all time versus UConn. Their first matchup was on Oct. 12, 2002. Here, the Lakers beat the Huskies 2-0 in game one and won 4-2 in game two. The following season, they opened the season by beating the Huskies 2-1 and then tying 2-2. The Lakers then beat them 4-0 in a one-off game in the 2005-06 season. In the 2006-07 season, they tied 3-3 before the Lakers blanked them 5-0 in game two. The 2008-09 season was when the Huskies got their first win and series split over the Lakers when they beat them 3-2 in game one. Most recently, the two teams played in a tournament in Buffalo where the Lakers won 3-1. The Lakers are 4-0-1 at home against the Huskies. 
 
Lakers to Look Out for
Julia Perjus leads the Laker's goals and points column with five goals and two assists for seven points. Perjus has two multi-goal games this season and has a .507 faceoff win percentage. The Stockholm native also scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win against No. 10 St. Lawrence in the Laker's most recent home series. 
 
Nayeon Kim currently leads the team in assists with six. The freshman from South Korea has the second highest points on the team and second highest net rating at +3. 
 
Makayla Javier has one goal, four assists, and five points this season. The Laker's captain scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win at New Hampshire where she was then named AHA Defender of the Week. Her 27 blocked shots put her at second in the nation and her 230 career blocks are first in the nation among all active skaters.
 
Magdalena Luggin started between the pipes against No. 5/6 Minnesota Duluth and recorded a career-high 47 saves in the first game and another 28 saves in the second game. Luggin was the winning netminder in game one of the New Hampshire series. The Austrian native then posted 25 saves and a shutout victory against No. 10 St. Lawrence, which led to her being named the AHA Goaltender of the Week. 
 
Tara Bach started game two against UNH and recorded 25 saves and a shutout in her first career game. 
 
Scouting No. 8/9 UConn 
  • The Huskies finished last season 22-12-2 overall and 19-6-2 in the Hockey East. 
  • They finished first in the Hockey East standings last season with 58 points. 
  • They allowed 38 goals in the conference and 60 goals overall, both the lowest in their conference. 
  • The Huskies beat Merrimack 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East tournament before falling to Northeastern in the semifinals, 4-0. 
  • This season, UConn beat No. 10 St. Cloud 2-1, No. 9 Clarkson 3-2, and swept No. 15 Princeton 2-1 and 3-0. 
  • They have yet to play an unranked opponent. 
  • Kyla Josifovic (4G, 3A, 7 PTS) and Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux (0G, 4 A, 4 PTS), and Maya Serdachny (0G, 1A, 1 PT, 18 BLKS) all lead the team in goals, assists, points, and blocks.
